Section 125 of the Policing and Crime Act 2017 amends subsection 57(1) of the Firearms Act 1968 to update the definition of “firearm” as being:

  • Lethal barreled weapon – from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged.
  • A prohibited weapon.
  • A relevant component part in relation to a lethal barreled weapon or a prohibited weapon can be used as a part of a lethal barreled weapon or prohibited weapon; or
  • an accessory to a lethal barreled weapon or a prohibited weapon where the accessory is designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon including stun guns and CS sprays.


Examples of particular firearms offences:

  • Possession
  • Possession of a firearm without a certificate
  • Possession of a shotgun without a certificate
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon
  • Possession of ammunition
  • Possession of a firearm/ammunition with the intent to endanger life
  • Possession of imitation firearms
  • Possession of a stun gun or CS spray
  • Conversion-Shortening shotgun to a length less than 60.96cm. Also conversion into a firearm anything which had the appearance of being a firearm that was originally incapable of discharging any missile through its barrel
  • Importation of firearms/ammunition
